Dora DVD
Scientific research into educational TV shows and how young children learn from them had initially lead to the development of shows like Sesame Street (one of the very first) to other shows that came later like Blue’s Clues and Dora the Explorer. Although these are far from being the only shows available these shows continue to stay at the top in popularity with the kids that watch them and the moms that watch and participate with them.
Today let’s focus on Dora the Explorer TV episodes and why they are so popular with parents.
The Dora DVD shows are an intelligent combination of education through entertainment. The educational aspects of the shows are interactive and engage the child in participation beyond just sitting and watching and give the kids that watch these shows a boost in the exercise of the social and academic development of preschoolers.
The episodes take the form of an interactive adventure and, as such, engage the viewers to become more active by being more mentally and physically involved in the stories. This benefit is multiplied when a parent is also involved participating along with and working together with the child. By doing so the educational aspects both social and academic are greatly enhanced by the parent reinforcing the lessons being taught in the episodes by helping the child to apply them to everyday activities.
There are other ways for a parent to further enhance their child’s ability to absorb, retain and apply the lessons from each episode by using the tools that Dora DVD uses over and over in the adventures she undertakes like the use of maps for instance. If you go to the store take a few minutes to draw a simple map showing how to get from home to the store. Add a few ‘landmarks’ to the map (a favorite play ground, a friends house, a store the child has been to a few times, etc) and then have your child hold the map and help point out the landmarks as you come across them until you reach your destination.
If it’s counting and number names involve your child in recognizing numbers by locating them and identifying them on the recipes sheet as you ask how many eggs and such you need to do the next thing.
A very popular thing to do is to keep a magnetized plastic alphabet on the refrigerator door so you can help her to remember the spelling and meaning of new words introduced in the episodes.
If your child is just at the point to be able to take advantage of the Dora DVD adventures then you’ll by thrilled to know that the Dora the Explorer TV show has been on the air for more than a decade. You will have no problem finding enough available materials to provide your child with plenty of opportunities to continually absorb and build on as he or she approaches school age.
You can find multitudes of episodes on DVD through the Dora the Explorer website and even a choice to rent or purchase through Amazon.com. Let me make a suggestion and try to watch them all in the order they were published. This way, your child’s development through the use of this material will be more comprehensive and will continue to build upon what came before. Also, it’s easier to keep track of what you have already seen or not.
